Why Are You in Business?
Most people start businesses for the same reason, money!
They want financial freedom.
They want a side hustle away from the usual 9-5.
They want to build something for their future.
And while there’s nothing wrong with any of these or wanting wealth, I’ve learned something that cost me greatly, If your only motivation for business is money, you’ll either burn out, lose direction, or compromise your values along the way.
I know because I’ve been there.
I’ve started businesses that were purely profit-driven. Some made money, some didn’t. But the ones that truly thrived, the ones that lasted and actually made an impact, were the ones rooted in purpose.
Because in the Kingdom, business is not about making money. It’s about fulfilling God’s assignment.
When God puts a business idea in your heart, it’s not just to make you rich. It’s to solve problems, serve people, and expand His Kingdom. The money? That’s just a byproduct.
Faith driven entrepreneurs don’t chase wealth. They chase purpose, and wealth follows.
God Has a Purpose for Your Business
Every business that aligns with the Kingdom has a divine assignment. Your business is a tool in God's hands to:
Solve problems that matter
Serve people with excellence
Provide opportunities and employment
Influence industries with Kingdom values
Fund Kingdom projects and missions
The problem is, many entrepreneurs skip this step. They start businesses because it’s trendy or profitable but never ask:
“God, why are You giving me this idea?”
If your business has no Kingdom purpose, it will feel like a burden. But when your business aligns with God's will, He will supernaturally open doors, bring favor, and guide you through every challenge.
Joseph: A Businessman with a Kingdom Assignment
A perfect example of purpose-driven business is Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 41:39-44).
Joseph didn’t start out as a businessman. He was just a dreamer, literally. But God used his gifts of wisdom, administration, and problem-solving to put him in charge of Egypt’s economy. Pharaoh made him Governor over Egypt, and Joseph managed one of the largest economic strategies in biblical history, storing food for seven years to survive a famine.
What if Joseph had been selfish? What if he only used his power to get rich? Egypt and many surrounding nations would have starved to death.
Instead, Joseph understood his divine business assignment:
- To manage resources wisely
- To prepare for the future
- To save lives
And because of that, his business (resource management) prospered under God’s favor.
Here’s the key lesson: Your business is not just about you. It’s about what God wants to do through you.
How to Align Your Business with Kingdom Values
If you want God to breathe on your business, it has to be rooted in purpose. Here’s how:
1. Start with Prayer & Revelation every day
Ask God:
Why did You give me this business idea?
Who am I called to serve?
How can this business reflect Your Kingdom?
2. Solve a Real Problem
Joseph solved a famine crisis. What problem are you solving?
Kingdom businesses provide real value, not just make money.
3. Run Your Business with Kingdom Principles
Integrity over shortcuts (Proverbs 11:1)
Excellence over mediocrity (Colossians 3:23)
Stewardship over wastefulness (Luke 16:10)
Purpose Brings Provision
One thing I’ve learned? When your business serves God’s purpose, He funds it.
I’ve seen God bring investors, partnerships, unexpected clients, and divine connections simply because I stopped chasing money and started chasing my Kingdom assignment.
If you’re struggling in your business, ask yourself:
“Am I building for profit, or am I building for purpose?”
Because when we build for purpose, God will bring the profit…..
